There is an internal by-pass valve in spin-on air compressor oil filter. Once the differential pressure over the oil filter becomes too big, the by-pass valve will open, and allow the oil to flow, without going through the oil filter, sending unfiltered oil to the screw element and the bearings. The thought behind this is ‘better dirty or than no oil.
